Is the Sony WH-1000XM5 comfortable for long sessions?

The XM5 weigh 250 g, identical to the XM6, with soft synthetic leather ear pads that distribute pressure evenly. The headband is slightly thicker than the XM6 but equally comfortable. After four hours of continuous wear, there’s no hot spot or pressure point.

The folding mechanism is less compact than the XM6, the XM5 fold flat but don’t collapse inward. The included case is wider as a result. For daily commuting, this difference is negligible.

How does the Sony WH-1000XM5 sound?

30mm drivers deliver a balanced, warm sound signature. LDAC support enables Hi-Res audio streaming, and DSEE Extreme upscales compressed formats in real time. Bass is present without being overpowering, mids are clear, and highs are detailed without sibilance.

The soundstage is slightly narrower than the XM6 but wider than the XM4. For most listeners, the difference is academic, both sound excellent. The XM5’s strength is consistency: every genre sounds good without EQ adjustments.

How effective is the WH-1000XM5 noise cancellation?

Industry-leading ANC with Sony’s Auto NC Optimizer that adapts to your environment. 20 levels of ambient sound mode for when you need awareness. On planes, the XM5 reduce engine drone to a faint hum, still impressive after two years on the market.

The XM6’s AI-adaptive ANC is a step forward, but the XM5’s noise cancellation is 90% as effective for most environments. In quiet offices and commutes, you won’t notice the difference.

30 hours with ANC on, 40 hours without. Quick charge: 3 minutes gives 3 hours of playback. In testing, the battery consistently hit 28-30 hours with ANC, real-world usage matches Sony’s claims.

For most users, this means charging once a week. The USB-C charging is convenient, the same cable as your phone.
